A conversation with Lisa reminded me of a trip that I took this December up to the Superior Hiking Trail that I thought I would share.
I left Tettageuche State Park with snow shoes and fairly heavy pack for my first ever snow camping trip. The goal was to shoe 6 miles to my intended camp-site. Having never done this before, I quickly realized that snow-shoeing is a lot slower than normal hiking.
I think I made it about 3 miles when I stopped to make some lunch and learned a very important lesson: when it's below freezing, keep your stove fuel warm! I couldn't even get my jet-boil warm enough to melt snow! I decided to make camp for the day and hike out that next morning. It was a cold night with temps dropping to -5. I did get some cool pics and learned many valueable lessons that I can
take with me on the next trip.Has anyone else gone Winter camping/hiking? I'd love to hear any tips and suggestions you might have in regards to staying warm etc.

Go in the Summer Crazy boy. just kidding. I'm going to give this some thought. when I slept outside, I had 2 sleeping bags, I wore polar fleece and had a bottle of coffee between my legs. no kidding, we called it crotch coffee ever after. It helped alot.
OK, I must be on the wrong blog if you're talking about crotch coffee 'cuz I thought this was a family-friendly blog. My goodness, Lisa, you do have tales to tell.
Aaron, I admire your willingness to go winter camping by yourself for the first time. It's a serious business - esp when it gets below zero. I've camped on snow a bit and the one sure thing I know is have lots of padding between your body and the snow. Most of the pads I see are 1/2 to 1/3 as thick as they should be.
